Coming of Age – the art and science of ageing
11 July 2012
Professor Tom Kirkwood
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/iah/staff/profile/tom.kirkwood
Thomas Kirkwood CBE made his contribution to the biology of ageing by proposing the concept of Disposable soma. He is currently a researcher in Newcastle University and heads The Institute for Ageing and Health in its School of Clinical Medical Sciences. He is the author of Time of Our Lives: The Science of Human Aging (1999) and The End of Age: Why Everything About Aging Is Changing (2001), and co-author of Chance, Development, and Aging (2000, together with Caleb E. Finch).
Kirkwood was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2009 New Year Honours.
Tom Kirkwood writes:
Everything about ageing is changing. Yet attitudes to old age have a long way to go if they are to catch up. We need to look closely at what science is revealing about the true nature of the ageing process, which is far more intriguing and more malleable than used to be thought. We need also to find new ways to share these insights with society at large. In Coming of Age, art and science join forces to change our ways of looking at age. With new vision comes new understanding, and through new knowledge comes fresh power to live our longer lives to the full.
