GV Art & Mind Symposium 30: Nicholas Humphrey

To coincide with the exhibition ‘Portal’ at October Gallery we have a very special event for you at the gallery itself. Our Symposium will be in its usual format with a meal and drinks followed by a guest presentation and discussion.

The gallery say: ‘The exhibition Portal presents a gateway through which to examine how trances, visions and dreams manifest in human consciousness, becoming the raw material that both artists and scientists interpret.’ For exhibition information see:

GV Art & Mind Symposium 30:

Professor Nicholas Humphrey

Consciousness as Art

NH2016

Our guest speaker is Nicholas Humphrey. Nicholas is currently Emeritus Professor of Psychology, London School of Economics, Visiting Professor of Philosophy, New College of the Humanities and Senior Member, Darwin College, Cambridge.  He is a theoretical psychologist who is known for his work on the evolution of human intelligence and consciousness. He studied mountain gorillas with Dian Fossey in Rwanda, he was the first to demonstrate the existence of “blindsight” after brain damage in monkeys, he proposed the celebrated theory of the “social function of intellect”, and he is the only scientist ever to edit the literary journal Granta.  His books include Consciousness Regained, The Inner Eye, A History of the Mind, Leaps of Faith, The Mind Made Flesh, Seeing Red and most recently Soul Dust.

It will be extremely interesting to hear what he has to say on his chosen topic and to discuss with it him – especially sitting among these particular exhibits.

The price of the evening is £25 per person. This includes entry and an excellent set two course meal. Vegetarian option available. There will be a pay bar for drinks.
